In this course we shall be concentrating on both analytical and learner-centred/ task-based approaches towards short narrative texts. We shall start by looking at some texts from the recently introduced new textbooks from Klett [Green Line] and Cornelsen [English G 21], year 6 and 7, and trying out the suggestions they make in their respective -Lehrerhandbücher” as regards the teaching of these texts. We shall then look at and experiment with the form of the mini saga [put into Google and have a look] and the various ways it can be used in the classroom including the writing of our own mini sagas. The focus will then be on a selection of -real”short stories taken from Thomas Tepe’s 21 New Short Shorts, Klett Verlag, suitable for years 9-13. We shall be experimenting with some of the creative exercises he suggests. After this we shall be reading 2-3 topical Commonwealth short stories from the Internet and, working in groups, creating our own analyses plus experimenting with various pre-, while- and post-reading activities which could be used in the classroom. Students who take part in this course are expected to attend regularly and also to take an active part in all class activities.
