In this course we will be concerned with words and their internal structure in English. Native speakers of the language are aware of this structure and are competent to actively manipulate it, for example in order to be able to understand the meaning of words they themselves may have never heard before. Thus, for example, you may have never in your life heard the word Potterisation before, but you will nevertheless be immediately able to tell that Potter-ise-ation must be a noun that refers to the process of being potter-ised, which again probably means something like 'being influenced by something having to do with the publication of the Harry Potter books'. We will find in this course that the formation of complex words is by no means random and can be described in terms of clearly definable rules. We will mainly deal with the two basic types of forming structurally complex words - derivation and compounding -, studying what speakers of English know intuitively about word structure in their language, and how this knowledge is accounted for in modern linguistic theory.
