Das Exkursionsmodul besteht formal aus zwei Teilen, die im gleichen Semester oder zwei aufeinander folgenden Semestern stattfinden können: Übung zur wissenschaftlichen Vorbereitung der Exkursion (P 10.1) und Exkursion selbst (P 10.2). Beide sind bereits vor Wintersemester-Beginn zu wählen. Die Teilnehmerzahl ist auf 20 begrenzt. Feb. 2017 With its almost 250 professional theatres London is regarded, together with New York, as one of the two theatre capitals of the world. During a four-day trip to London in early 2017 we will explore the city’s vibrant and complex theatrical ecosystem, aiming to take in the commercial theatres of Shaftesbury Avenue and the West End as much as the flagship arts centres of the subsidised sector. Talking to practitioners and not forgetting smaller neighbourhood, fringe, and pub theatres, we will investigate how theatre as an art form engages with and involves London’s diverse communities. The focus of this excursion is not primarily on plays and performances (although we will of course see a variety of plays and performances), but on the cultural buildings and spaces in which they take place. Experiencing these spaces practically as visitors and audience members we will analyse their function and history by considering the three crucial factors of culture, commerce, and community: Theatre as culture (or art), theatre as a commercial enterprise (-show business”), and theatre as a transformative social practice. We will discuss funding structures, the relationship between the subsidised and the commercial sectors, the different routes that a production may take through the city when it transfers from one venue to another, and the implications of all of this for theatre practitioners and audiences. We will also consider the changing role of cultural buildings, looking at how arts centres are attempting to become open spaces dedicated to serving the community rather than temples of high art.
