Übung Sprachpraxis Englisch 3 Essay

This is an advanced course in English. This course will focus on improving  your essay writing skills. We will discuss and practice the techniques of writing an argumentative essay. This entails doing three different kinds of exercise: a. writing skills exercises which are designed to help you master the form of the argumentative essay, and which involves examing the different parts of the essay - thesis statements, introductions, line of argument, conclusions b. language skills exercises which aim at improving your ability to construct complex compound statements of different kinds, and particularly those structures used most frequently in essay writing c. exercises designed to stimulate critical thought, which will focus in particular on text analysis and the problem of generating ideas for an essay. In the context of the evaluation of longer texts, this involves a. paying attention to the reconstruction of the central idea and the supporting argument of a text, and b. to showing you the various strategies you can use to generate ideas for an essay. The classes are based on worksheets which you receive at the beginning of each lesson. Extensive use of video clips will be made to illustrate argumentative points. To obtain credit for the course you must pass a written test at the end of the semester. Please note that Ang 043 and Ang 046 are not parallel courses.
