IMPORTANT!!! Please note that this seminar ends in December 2016. To make up for the January sessions there will be one additional blockseminar day on December 9th. APs are ONLY possible as ORAL EXAMS (no papers)! From Harry Potter to The Hunger Games - the triumphal popularity of the Bildungsroman remains unbroken. The postcolonial re-writing of this Western based genre will be the focus of this seminar. While the impact of the colonial force of 19th century Britain on the genre brought about a reconfiguration mainly in matters of contents, postcolonial authors of the second half from the 20th century have redefined the structural composition to align the form with their socio-historical/cultural and idiosyncratic background. In this seminar we will experience the diversity of the Bildungsroman: novels by Nigerian Writer Chigozie Obioma, the Black British author Bernardine Evaristo and the recipient of the 2003 Nobel Prize in Literature J.M. Coetzee as well as the movie The Whale Rider. Starting with the genre-traditional coming-of-age novel we will soon turn to its variants (from uncompleted or tentative Bildungsromane to the neo-slave narratives). Several short stories written by V.S. Naipaul and his brother Shiva will add a further focus of the autobiographical elements of the postcolonial story of initiation.
