Jetzt Lernplan erstellenMisled by some optimistic announcements concerning the publication date of the sixth volume of G.R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, this course was originally intended as a critical assessment of The Winds of Winter. Since we are, however, still waiting that the Winds are coming, we shall critically engage with those productions that are supposed to help fans endure the long wait. Probably the most important of these productions to date, and hence the core focus of our course, is certainly the audiovisual fanfiction that HBO has been producing for five years now – the most recent installment happily coinciding with our summer term. In the first section of the course, we shall therefore assess in depth the TV series as a particular example of fan fiction, following its own aesthetic and economic rules. In the second section, we shall then move on to assess further material that is supposed to keep the followers alert, examining selected fan-fiction productions as well as the pre-publication marketing process around Martin’s series.
In order to make competent participation in discussions possible and to avoid -spoiler” outcries, participants in this course will be expected to have read ALL the five published volumes of Martin’s series before the beginning of the summer term.
Participants must have read ALL FIVE VOLUMES of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (i.e. A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords, A Feast for Crows, A Dance with Dragons) by the beginning of the term.
