Topic In previous days HCI was dominated by the focus on usability, which was defined as the -extent to which a product can be used by specified users to achieve specified goals with effectiveness, efficiency and satisfaction in a specified context of use.” (ISO 9241-11:1998). Nowadays HCI deals more with the issue of user experience, which is defined as a person's perception and response that result from the use or anticipated use of a product, system or service (ISO 9241-210:2008). From this backdrop we want to ask in this reading class what that thing is called ‘user experience’ . Following Battarbee and Koskinen (2005) there are three main approaches to applying and interpreting user experience in design: • The measuring approach builds on the notion that experiences can be measured by standardized methods and is mainly used in development and testing. • The empathic approach claims that experience is subjective in nature but re-enactable by people sharing the same experience horizon. • The pragmatist approach experiences are momentary constructions that grow from the interaction between people and their environment. It fluctuates between the states of cognition, sub consciousness and storytelling, depending on our actions and encounters in the world. In the first part of the class we study each view by discussing it on actual papers in the field of HCI research. Afterwards we want to take a closer look on the underlying constitution-theories about experience as outlined by the Phenomenology, Pragmatism and Philosophy of Mind. Next year we will start to apply the gained insights to discuss actual research projects conducted at the University of Siegen. • Battarbee, K. & Koskinen, I. Your overall grade for the class will be made up of 30% reading summaries, 60% term paper, and 10% participation. Readings and Summaries The articles and papers we read in this seminar are listed below in the schedule. All readings will be made available online. At the beginning of each reading session, the paper or article is summarized by one participant with regard to guiding question discussed in the seminar beforehand: The presentation of the summary should be about 20 minutes followed by half an hour discussion. We expect all participants to read the relevant papers and chapters as a basis for the discussion. Term paper We will also assign you to groups to write a term paper together on a topic concerning the social analysis of digital media and technology. For supporting you with the writing of the paper, we will organize two editorial sessions in the lecture—one early to assign topics and provide you with advice on how scientific papers are written, and a second one later in the semester where each group presents the current state and gets for discussion in the plenum.
