The workshop aims to develop an interdisciplinary design work to create an imaginary spatial connection between the split city of Guben (Germany) - Gubin (Poland). The city has been heavily destroyed during world war II, including main sites of joint identity such as the historical centre and a theatre located on an island in the middle of the river Neiße. Until today both parts of the split city lack a real centre. The checkpoint is the only connection between the German and the Polish side, causing a lot of traffic in both parts. The beautiful historical industrial buildings of Gubener Wolle - formerly one of the most important industries in the city are out of use today and threatend to be destroyed in the near future. Within the workshop the students will work at a concept for the spacial development of the city centre. In a second step selected part will be designed in further detail, considering the history as well as the current spatial structure and the ongoing development in both parts of the city. This will correspond with work in different scales, reaching from 1:10.000 to 1:500.
The students will work in interdisciplinary teams of architects, urban and landscape planners.
Site:
On the conceptual level the work will concentrate on the city centre along the river Neiße and Lubza. Beside the historical centre this includes the island in the river Neiße, the historical industrial site of Gubener Wolle along the river, the Neiße-hills (Himmelsleiter) and the historical settlements in the polish part. The design work will be done for a smaller area or for a building. There are different places of interest for design work: the island in the river Neiße (Wyspa Teatralna), the waterfront along the river Neiße including some industrial buildings of Gubener Wolle, the bridge over the river connecting the Polish and the German side [design for the existing bridge at the checkpoint or for a new bridge to the island Wyspa Teatralna]
