Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) describes the educational approach in which a foreign language is used for the teaching and learning of content subjects. In German schools we find it implemented as -Bilingualer Unterricht-. The integrative teaching and learning of both, content matter and a foreign language, has seen a remarkable development in the last twenty years. The interconnectedness of the globalised world, the multiethnic make-up of modern societies, and the unification processes within the European Union are just some of the factors that have contributed to the success story of CLIL-classrooms: -In Europe today, there is a desire to improve language-learning opportunities for all young people in order to increase European cohesion and competitiveness.- (Mehisto, Marsh & Frigols 2008) CLIL is seen as one of the most innovative educational approaches to react to the increased linguistic demands of the global age. In the course of our seminar we will have a look at the teaching methodology of CLIL-classrooms and see that modern paradigms of English language teaching (e.g. authenticity, task-based language learning, project-based language learning, and intercultural communicative competence) can easily be introduced in CLIL-contexts. Operating from a linguistic perspective on CLIL teaching we can then explore in which ways it compliments second language acquisition processes.
