Projektgegenstand /Planungs- bzw. Untersuchungsraum High population an urban growth, coupled with urban poverty, are critical issues in many cities of developing countries. Ethiopia - one of the poorest countries in the world - is the 2nd most populous African Country and is rapidly urbanizing. Housing a growing population, mainly poor, is a big challenge for the Ethiopian Government, which is lacking resources to meet the severe housing demand on the one hand and disregarding the real living needs and customs of the people on the other hand. An adequate housing entails not only a physical planning but also a safe environment where people live, pray, share affections and do business with other people. About 90% of the population of Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, live in substandard housing that need a significant intervention, either replacement or upgrading. In the recent years the Government has proposed State-built mass housing projects (condominium housing) - recalling some aspects of projects run in the ´60s and ´70s in the Countries of the south - with the aim of reducing slum areas and unemployment rates. Aufgabenstellung /Problemstellung The focus of the students´ work will be identified and defined by the students during the introductory phase. Probably, a first general analysis on housing policies in Developing Countries will be done to get an overview of the policies evolution over the past forty years. Attention will be paid on the role of the housing sector in Ethiopia, and of social housing in particular, in order to be able to critically answer selected questions about the analysed housing project, such as: the use of the public open space in the new neighbourhood; linkages with the surrounding environment; criteria for targeting of the intervention's beneficiaries; functional use of the new neighbourhoods; circulation planning; etc. Further questions can be suggested by the students according to their interest. A request for a financial support will be submitted to a donor in order to allow the students group to visit a project's site. Nevertheless, the students will be most probably asked to partly financially contribute. Clarification on this matter will be provided during the E-phase. Ziel After recognizing the importance of housing for the development of the Country, on the basis of what learnt by the current housing situation in Ethiopia, the main goal of the students' project will be to develop an Action Plan to be included in the Country Strategy, by suggesting actions and defining roles and actors to be involved.
