The course consists of two parts:
1. Introduction to Strategic Management
2. A virtual game with partner students at a US-University
In this course, the student will apply functional expertise to actual strategic issues. The students will be challenged to assess real managerial problems, and to developwell reasoned, innovative, and practical solutions to these problems.
Glo-Bus Game will be an intrinsic part of this course. Teams will be formed and will compete with other teams in the class for the best performing global company. I addition, this course is being administered together with an stategy course in the USA. Teams will be made up of US and Germany based students and decisions must be coordinated across the time zones, cultures and language barriers. It is planned that the culminating presentation take place simultaneously in Germany and the US, live if possible, otherwise we will attempt to provide a recording mechanism in order to play the presentations in class. The presentation should cover major benchmarks of performance , market share, gross profit, etc. as well as the strategies employed and their success and /or failure. A clear analysis should be presented on how performance could have been imporved into the future, as if presenting at a shareholders meeting.
Objectives:
At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:
A: demonstrate an understanding of key terms, concepts and theories of strategy, strategic analysis, and policy formulation
B: recognize the interrelationships between organizations and their external environments
C: describe the interrelationships between the functional areas of the firm as depicted in value chain analysis and their contribution to strategic success
D: assess the strategic issues that confront organizations
E: critically analyze and respond to managerial dilemmas that arise in competitive resource environments
F: develop solutions to organizational dilemmas that integrate multiple functional areas of the firm
G: communicate strategic and policy alternatives, both in writing and in speech, to concerned stakeholders
H: demonstrate the ability to work in, and contribute to work in teams
