Seminar Female Kanackness Gendered Ghetto Voices from New York to Istanbul from Duisburg to

-Bin nicht deutsch, nicht türkisch, bin ’ne Kanackin!” says porn-rapper Lady Bitch Ray in one of her interviews. But what does she mean when she calls herself a female ‘Kanack’? From a transcultural perspective, female ‘Kanackness’ signals a new form of representation in post-migration ‘German’ culture. In this class, we will not only talk about the cultural dimension of Kanackness, but about its spatial dimension. This means, we will discuss how the particular spaces (de)construct our gendered and ethnicized identities. We will try to answer the following questions: What is the role of space in our way of creating gender roles, ethnic and religious identities? Why is ‘Where are you from?’ one of the first questions, when we get to know somebody? Why does locality matter? Approaching Lady Bitch Ray’s Kanack image from the perspective of postcolonial sociology, we will talk about notorious (yet glorified) neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg, Neukölln, Marxloh and Kassel Nordstadt. We will see that identities are more fluid and translocal than we think. In contrast to the general assumption that Kanackness can only be found in Germany, we will discover its multiple roots in the Bronx (New York) and in Taksim (Istanbul). Note: We will also use visual resources (such as movies, music videos, documentaries) as course materials. The texts for this course will be mainly in English and German. However, Turkish and Spanish texts will be available on request. Close and intertextual reading is highly recommended for this class . Course materials will be announced in due time.
