Seminar Marx and Marxism a critical reading course

Marx and Marxism: a critical reading course - Schedule Winter Semester 2011-2012 Tuesdays 2 - 4 p.m., additional sessions: Monday (4-8 p.m.) 7.11., 12.12., 19.12. Room: Kurt-Schumacher-Straße 2, room 11 (first floor), starting 18th October 2011 (Lecturer Lars Stubbe: lars.stubbe@uni-kassel.de) Marx is one of the classics in-and-against the social sciences. The worldwide resurgence of class movements at the beginning of the 21st century has shown a need for theoretical reflection on the underlying issues. In this course we will take a closer look at some of Marx's core texts and seminal Marxist texts by other authors that will facilitate an introduction into topics, approaches and new directions within Marxist thought. The course is intended to work as a reading course. This means that a lot of reading will have to be done outside class. The text(s) of each session are to be presented by the students followed by a group discussion that is to explore contents, meanings and possibilities of the text. Students that want to obtain credits will have to present a text, participate regularly and actively in class and write a short paper (format: one and a half spaces, 12-point font, to be handed in by 1st March 2010; worth 4 LPG credits (10-15 pages) and 6 GPE credits (20-25) pages) on a topic of their own choice related to the course's materials. A reader with all the materials will be available in a local copy shop. All materials are also uploaded on moodle.
