Kurs voll - Anmeldungen nur noch für die Warteliste!   -And above all things have fervent love for one another, for love will cover a multitude of sins.- - Peter 4:8, New King James Version (NKJV)   In the course of this seminar, we will explore the conception of love in its various and rich aspects and their depiction in medieval literature, especially in connection to the concepts of marriage and sexuality. A multitude of different genres and sources will be used in order to establish a well-founded understanding of different concepts of love and affection which are displayed in relationships between husband and wife, young lovers, man and God, servant and liege lord etc.   -Ill is it for him who must suffer longing for his loved one.- The Wife's Lament (vv. 52-53)   We will talk about determined ideals and conventions of love relationships and their actual realisation in selected primary texts such as The Wife of Bath's Tale and its prologue or The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle; while works such as elegies, heroic epics or dream visions will illustrate the aspects of longing and loss. Penitentials and other similar sources will help us understand the religious aspect of love and illustrate the ideals that the Catholic Church tried to implement in medieval society.
