With the end of the Cold War peacebuilding efforts by the United Nations and other external actors intensified considerably. Peacebuilding combines security and development policies and involves a wide range of activities to create sustainable peace in post-conflict societies, such as demilitarization and provision of public security, reconciliation and transitional justice, reconstruction of an effective government and an active civil society, and last but not least the meeting of basic needs and the stimulation of economic growth. Based on relevant literature we will discuss the dominant liberal paradigm of international peacebuilding, related experiences and controversial assessments. The seminar will be held in English language. Students are required to actively participate by reading the assigned texts in preparation of the weekly class debates, by submitting -reading notes” for all assigned texts and by introducing one of the assigned readings in a group presentation. According to the ECTS system, 60 hours of work have been calculated for active participation, including reading the assigned texts, discussions in class, follow-up and preparation of the assigned presentation. This means that students should be prepared to invest an average of four hours per week for the seminar. As a basic principle any deeper understanding of the topic requires the continuous, active and prepared participation in the seminar.
